Cutting

Here the material and design tracks converge. Pattern pieces are nested in a marker to reduce waste, fabric is spread in layers, and pieces are cut with automatic or straight-knife cutters — then numbered and bundled to keep size and shade consistent.

What happens at this stage

Marker making nests every pattern piece across the fabric width to minimise waste. Fabric is spread in a lay of stacked plies.

Automatic or straight-knife cutters cut through the lay. Pieces are numbered and bundled by size and shade so that panels from the same ply are sewn together.
