Stage 02 / 09 · Material track

Yarn and fabric

Fibres are carded, drawn and spun into yarn; yarn count and twist set strength and feel. Circular knitting machines then loop the yarn into a tube of single-jersey fabric, where gauge, loop length and finishing determine GSM and handfeel.

What happens at this stage

Carding aligns fibres into a sliver; optional combing removes short fibres for a smoother yarn. Drawing evens the sliver before ring or open-end spinning twists it into yarn.

On a circular knitting machine, needles form rows of interlocking loops into a seamless tube of single-jersey — the standard T-shirt fabric. Machine gauge, loop length and yarn count together set the fabric weight (GSM).
